Denny’s: Now Serving Hobbit Hole Comforts

THE FACTS:

In honor of the December 14 release of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, America’s favorite diner is featuring a limited-time special menu with Middle Earth-themed food. From the “Shire Sausage Skillet” to “Gandalf’s Gobble Melt,” there is something for everyone! Additionally, anyone who orders one of these Hobbit-themed entrees can receive a set of collectible Hobbit trading cards upon request, while supplies last.

MY TAKE:

I’ll be honest—when I first heard about this, I thought it would just be a ho-hum list of already-existing menu items with Hobbit names slapped on. So I was genuinely surprised to find completely original entrees staring up at me from the menu when I sat down at my booth. Some of items were half-hearted, like the “Ring Burger”– which is just a hamburger with the addition of sautéed mushrooms and topped with three onion rings. (The only thing that legitimizes this attempt at a masterpiece is hobbits’ insatiable appetite for mushrooms.) And of course, Denny’s couldn’t possibly leave out their star menu item—so the “Build Your Own Hobbit Slam” was a given.

Perhaps most impressive is the “Hobbit Hole Breakfast,” which sounds like a recipe from Bilbo’s own kitchen. Two eggs are fried right into cheddar bun halves, and served with bacon and hash browns. Then there’s “Frodo’s Pot Roast Skillet.” I’m not sure why they named this item after Frodo. He shows up in the film for, what, five minutes? Oh, and the sausage used in the “Shire Sausage Skillet” is actually made by a British company called “Shire Foods.” Cool, right?

All in all, Denny’s did a great job setting up this menu, and I commend the effort. If you have a few bucks on hand for “third breakfast,” go check it out while this menu is still available. The prices are not terribly high, the portions are decent, and the food is delicious. (And I forgot to ask for the trading cards, so maybe you can get away with two sets.)
